Question:
I am interested in what my legislature is doing, but don’t know where to look. Any suggestions on how to find out what they are doing?
Answer:
Good question. There are four ways to find out what a legislative body is doing. They are:
- Pay attention to the media - more often than not, they report both the good and the bad of any legislative action.
- Call your legislator’s office and ask them if any bills were introduced that are of interest to you.
- The third way is on the internet. All legislative bodies have a website, and that website allows you to do a legislative search. That search will help you find legislation of interest.
- The last way to do it is the old fashioned way - by reading something called the daily file or journal. These documents not only list the daily committee meetings and legislative action(s), but also give you direct access to bill numbers that you can look up on their website. And remember, if worse comes to worse, if you find something you are interested in, but can’t get the actual bill, simply call your legislator and they will be glad to help you.
